About HVE files

A .HVE file is a binary data file known as a Windows Registry Hive, used by the Microsoft Windows operating system to store critical configuration data. Unlike standard text-based configuration files, .HVE files are proprietary binary databases that hold keys, subkeys, and values for the operating system, installed software, and user preferences (commonly found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_USERS).

Users typically encounter these files during forensic analysis, system backups, or when troubleshooting a corrupted user profile. The main drawback is that .HVE files are completely unreadable in standard text editors like Notepad++. Furthermore, because the OS actively locks these files while running, users often encounter "Access Denied" errors when trying to copy or convert them.

For analysis or editing, the most practical conversion is to REG (Registration Entries), which is a human-readable text format. This allows you to view the hierarchy and modify keys using a standard editor. For documentation purposes, converting to TXT provides a flat dump of the data. To perform these conversions, you generally need to load the hive into the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and use the "Export" function, or use forensic tools like Registry Explorer to parse the binary structure without mounting it to your live system.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HVE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DB-WAL, DRIVERS, SWAP and WALLPAPERLIST files.

The HVE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HVE converter.
