About HVC files
The .HVC file format is primarily recognized as a HotDocs Variable Collection File. These data files are utilized in automated document assembly workflows to store user-defined variables and interview fields for customized legal or contractual templates. Historically, these files were managed by HotDocs Developer, which would output an .HVC file alongside a JavaScript interview definition to run on a HotDocs Server. The major disadvantage of the .HVC format is that it is a legacy, proprietary data container that was phased out entirely after version 11 of the software in favor of modern XML manifests. Furthermore, users often mistakenly assume an .HVC file contains an actual readable document. In reality, it only holds the variable logic; the core text remains locked in separate template files. Opening them without the parent software or an active subscription leads to frustration, as standard word processors and web browsers cannot execute the interview logic natively. If you need to analyze the variable data outside of the original ecosystem, converting .HVC to readable text formats like TXT, XML, or JSON is highly recommended. While you will lose the interactive browser interview functionality, extracting the raw string variables makes the data portable and easy to review by developers or legal engineers. This file format is difficult to open or convert because .HVC files are entirely dependent on companion template files to function, confusing standard online converters that expect a self-contained layout. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HVC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The HVC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HVC converter.
