The .hpkg file format is a system package archive created exclusively for Haiku, an open-source operating system inspired by BeOS. These files contain compiled application binaries, shared libraries, and metadata necessary for software distribution and installation via the native Haiku package manager.
Opening these files outside of the Haiku environment is highly problematic. Standard archiving utilities like WinRAR or 7-Zip do not support the proprietary compression and directory structure used by Haiku. This creates a severe limitation for developers or users attempting to inspect the package contents, extract documentation, or audit source code on Windows, macOS, or Linux without setting up a dedicated Haiku virtual machine.
If you need to access the assets inside an .hpkg file on a non-Haiku system, your best option is to convert or extract the archive into standard formats like ZIP or .TAR.GZ. Be aware that extracting the package only gives you access to the raw files; the compiled executables will not run on any operating system other than Haiku.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is a highly specialized system archive designed to be mounted as a virtual filesystem rather than traditionally unpacked. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack the specific Haiku decompression libraries.
