About HMP files

The .HMP file extension is fragmented and used by several completely different applications. Its most common uses include HMI MIDI audio files created by Human Machine Interfaces for 1990s MS-DOS games like Street Fighter 2, audio project files for Magix Samplitude, and game data files for titles such as Heroes of Might and Magic, MechWarrior 5, and Worms. These files are highly proprietary and specialized. If your .HMP file is a Magix Samplitude project, it is built on the RIFF container format but only contains session data, not the actual audio tracks. You cannot open a game map .HMP in an audio editor, and you cannot play a BattleMech design file in a music player. This fragmented nature makes the format incredibly confusing for users and restricts compatibility. Converting an .HMP file depends entirely on its source. An HMI MIDI file can sometimes be converted to a standard .MID or .MP3 using specialized retro-gaming audio tools. However, Samplitude projects must be exported directly from the original software to create playable .WAV or .MP3 files. Game map data files usually cannot be converted into standard formats and must remain in their original form to function within the game engine. Because this is a closed format with multiple conflicting meanings, standard online converters usually fail to process it.
