About HMP files
The .hmp extension is a "chameleon" format used in three distinct, unconnected ecosystems: legacy DOS gaming, tabletop mech simulation, and professional audio production.
HMI MIDI Audio (Primary Use): Created by Human Machine Interfaces, this is a proprietary MIDI-like format found in classic 90s games like Descent, Warcraft II, and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Unlike standard MID files, HMP files contain driver-specific instructions, looping logic, and branching data that standard media players cannot interpret. To listen to these, you must convert them to standard MIDI or MP3, or use a specialized player like foobar2000 with a MIDI plugin.
HeavyMetal Pro (BattleTech): These are record sheets for "Mechs" created with the HeavyMetal Pro software. They act as a database of armor, weapons, and heat sinks for the BattleTech tabletop game. Since the original software is largely abandonware, users often need to convert these to PDF for printing or import them into modern open-source alternatives like MegaMekLab.
Magix Samplitude Project: In the context of Magix Samplitude, an HMP file (often alongside HDP and H0 files) helps manage project metadata or peak data. These are proprietary and generally cannot be "converted" without the host software; they must be exported as WAV or MP3 from within Samplitude.
