The .HMA file is a highly fragmented file extension used by several completely unrelated software ecosystems. Its most common uses include Hitman game data archives developed by IO Interactive, track index files for Humminbird fish finders, and Hi-MD MiniDisc audio files created by Sony Corporation. Other software, such as Humax set-top boxes, ESET security software, and ATLAS.ti also use the .HMA extension for internal data storage.
Because these files serve distinct purposes across different platforms, .HMA files are strictly proprietary. This is a massive disadvantage. You cannot double-click an .HMA file and expect a standard application to open it. For example, Sony's Hi-MD audio files are heavily protected by DRM and require outdated software like SonicStage to play or export to standard audio formats like MP3 or WAV. Hitman archives contain compiled 3D assets and textures that are useless outside the game engine without dedicated modding tools. Humminbird files are mere index pointers for GPS tracks, containing no readable map data themselves.
