About HMA files
The .HMA extension is a multi-purpose container most frequently encountered as a Sony Hi-MD Audio File. These files were the proprietary format used by Sony's Hi-MD MiniDisc recorders (like the Walkman MZ-RH1) to store high-fidelity audio or voice recordings alongside track data.
However, users often stumble upon .HMA files in completely different contexts: as data archives for the Hitman video game series (developed by IO Interactive), project data for the qualitative analysis tool ATLAS.ti, or track index files for Humminbird fish finders.
The primary problem for .HMA audio files is obsolescence. They are locked within Sony's discontinued ATRAC3plus ecosystem and typically require the defunct SonicStage software to open - a program known for compatibility issues on modern Windows 10/11 systems. Users cannot simply play these files in VLC or Windows Media Player, nor can they import them into DAWs like Audacity without prior conversion. For Hitman or Humminbird files, the challenge is proprietary encryption; these are binary blobs meant strictly for their parent hardware or software and are generally not "readable" by humans.
Recommended Conversion Targets:
For Audio (Sony Hi-MD): Convert to MP3 or AAC for universal playback on smartphones, or WAV (16-bit/44.1kHz) to preserve the uncompressed quality of the original MiniDisc recording for archiving.
For Data Analysis (ATLAS.ti): Export projects directly from the software to DOCX or PDF for sharing, as the raw .HMA file is useless without the full application.
For GPS/Marine (Humminbird): Use proprietary tools like HumminbirdPC to manage the data, potentially exporting waypoints to GPX for use in Google Earth.

The HMA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HMA converter.
