About HDRP files

The .hdrp file extension represents an HDRtist Pro Document. This proprietary project format is generated by HDRtist Pro, a high dynamic range (HDR) photography application developed by Ohanaware for macOS. It acts as a workspace container that stores multiple source images taken at different exposure brackets, alongside the tone-mapping algorithms, masks, metadata, and non-destructive edit history used to blend them into a single HDR photograph.

Opening and editing an .hdrp file requires the original HDRtist Pro software. Standard image viewers, web browsers, and popular raster graphics editors like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP do not natively support this proprietary workspace file.

Users frequently need to convert .hdrp files because they are effectively trapped in a software-specific, macOS-only ecosystem. You cannot upload an .hdrp file to a website, print it directly, or share it with clients who use Windows. Furthermore, these files are often massive because they contain multiple uncompressed source photos.

To make the final HDR image usable, the optimal conversion targets are JPG for web sharing and fast loading, or 16-bit TIFF or PNG for high-quality archiving and further post-processing. Converting to these flat image formats means permanently losing the original exposure layers and the ability to tweak the HDR blending parameters later.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to convert via standard online tools because it is a closed, proprietary workspace rather than a flat image file. Often, only the original software can properly render the complex tone-mapping data to export the final image. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (like a JPEG preview thumbnail), viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HDRP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The HDRP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HDRP converter.
