About H262 files

The .h262 file extension represents a raw video bitstream encoded with the ITU-T H.262 standard, which is technically identical to the MPEG-2 Part 2 video specification. These files are typically extracted (demuxed) from DVD-Video discs, Super Video CDs (SVCDs), or older digital television broadcasts. You can open and inspect these raw files with advanced media tools like VLC media player or process them via the command-line utility FFmpeg. For extensive technical details on the underlying encoding, visit the H.262 Wikipedia page.

The primary disadvantage of a raw .h262 file is the complete lack of a multimedia container. Because it is a raw bitstream, it does not hold audio tracks, subtitle data, or crucial timestamp metadata. This causes frequent playback errors and severe synchronization issues if you try to merge it with separate audio later. Modern web browsers and default operating system players like QuickTime or Windows Media Player cannot open them natively. Furthermore, MPEG-2 encoding is highly outdated, resulting in excessively large file sizes compared to modern compression standards.

You should convert .h262 to MP4 (using modern H.264 or H.265 encoding) for web compatibility and significantly smaller file sizes. If you want to keep the original quality without re-encoding, you must multiplex (mux) it into an MKV or TS container.

Because raw video streams lack container headers, this file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert for basic online software. Standard converters often fail to read the framerate or dimensions. If our analysis successfully detects the embedded video stream, we can wrap or convert it to standard formats.

Convert.Guru analyzes your H262 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
