Convert GWF to another file type
To convert GWF Data files to another format, you need GWpy or other Data software.
Convert a file to GWF
To convert other file formats to the "Scientific Data File" file type, you need software like GWpy or a similar tool.
About GWF files
The .GWF file extension is most commonly a Gravitational Wave Frame data file. These are utilized by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo to store complex interferometric time-series data. Alternatively, .GWF files appear as grid computing workload logs, SQL query workspaces for Benthic Software Golden, or construction tender specifications linked to GRAPHISOFT Archicad. Some are even XML-based knowledge graphs used by the OSTIS Project.
Working with these files presents several distinct disadvantages. They are incredibly niche and often heavily proprietary. Scientific frame data files are extremely large and require specialized programming environments to interpret. Commercial workspace files, like those from Golden or Archicad, require expensive paid licenses just to open. Because the structure is either a dense scientific array, a proprietary binary blob, or a Microsoft Compound wrapper, standard file converters cannot process them.
Converting a .GWF file usually requires the parent software. For scientific files, Python libraries like GWpy are needed to extract channels into HDF5 or CSV formats. SQL workspaces are best exported manually to SQL or TXT. Our analyzer will inspect the raw headers. If your file contains embedded plain text (like an SQL query) or standard XML, we can expose that data so you can recover your work without buying a license.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GWF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GWF file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use GWpy or similar software from the "Scientific Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to GWF, try GWpy or another comparable tool in the "Scientific Data Storage" category.
The GWF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GWF converter.
