Extract text from interactive whiteboard files (GWB)

A .GWB file typically functions as an interactive whiteboard presentation or gallery file. The vast majority of these files operate as SMART Board Gallery Items used by SMART Technologies to store educational resources like clipart, backgrounds, and multimedia. A smaller percentage are Interwrite Presentation Files generated by legacy Interwrite Workspace software to store lesson annotations and digital ink.
Because .GWB is a closed, proprietary format designed exclusively for classroom environments, it suffers from severe software lock-in. You cannot natively open a .GWB file on a standard smartphone, share it with a student who lacks the exact educational software, or view it in a web browser. If the original interactive software expires or requires an expensive paid subscription, your lesson data becomes entirely inaccessible.
To make these lessons accessible, converting a .GWB file to a PDF document or extracting the individual JPG and PNG images is the best practical workaround. PDF preserves the visual layout for easy reading and printing across all devices. Note that converting to these static formats will inherently strip away the interactive elements, such as movable objects or embedded animations.
This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because it relies on proprietary binary structures. Often, only the original interactive software can properly read or export the data.
