About GPSYS files

A .gpsys file is a proprietary Generic Particle System asset used internally by Retro Studios game engines. It is most notably found in the Metroid Prime series of video games. The file stores the mathematical parameters and behavioral rules for visual effects, such as smoke, explosions, sparks, and energy beams, rather than standard 3D geometry.

The .gpsys format has significant disadvantages for average users. It is strictly proprietary, closed-source, and highly specialized for specific Nintendo console architectures. Standard 3D software and consumer applications cannot read or open these files. The lack of official documentation makes it exceptionally difficult to use outside of its native game engine.

Game modders frequently need to convert .gpsys files to human-readable text formats like XML or JSON. This conversion allows users to edit the particle parameters - such as color, velocity, and lifespan - before recompiling the data back into the game archive. Specialized community tools, such as the Halide Engine Client Library (HECL), are typically required to decompile these game assets.

Because .gpsys is a compiled binary file rather than a standard document, standard online converters fail to process it. Standard converters look for recognized file headers that this proprietary format does not possess. Even if full conversion requires specialized modding software, our analysis tools can often inspect the file to extract underlying plaintext strings or embedded hex values.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GPSYS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
