About GPN files

The .GPN file primarily stores school timetable data generated by Untis (formerly gp-Untis), an educational scheduling software developed by Gruber & Petters. These files contain complex relational data, including teacher assignments, class rosters, room availability, and conflict resolution rules. A secondary, much rarer use for the .GPN extension is as a GlidePlan Map Document utilized for glider flight planning.

The major disadvantage of the .GPN format is its heavily restricted, proprietary nature. It is a closed file format designed strictly for the desktop ecosystem of Untis. You cannot open it in web browsers or standard spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel without first exporting the data from the original application. This creates a severe bottleneck for administrators and teachers who need quick access to schedule data but lack a paid software license.

Converting .GPN files to open targets like CSV, XLSX, or PDF is highly recommended for cross-platform sharing. However, because it is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters almost always fail to process the complex internal database structures. You will typically lose the specific visual timetable formatting during any forced conversion, but the core text data can sometimes be extracted.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can still inspect the file and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or partial data extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GPN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PNG, JPG, XMIND, SA3 and SA8 files.

The GPN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPN converter.
