Convert GMSPR to another file type
To convert GMSPR sprite assets to another format, you need GameMaker Studio or other Game software.
Convert a file to GMSPR
To convert other file formats to the "Game Sprite Asset" file type, you need software like GameMaker Studio or a similar tool.
About GMSPR files
A .GMSPR file is a proprietary game development asset created by GameMaker Studio. It stores 2D sprite data, including image frames, animation speeds, collision boundaries, and origin points used in level design and character animation.
The only official software designed to open, edit, and compile these files is GameMaker Studio (see GameMaker on Wikipedia).
The main disadvantage of the .GMSPR format is its strict reliance on the GameMaker ecosystem. You cannot directly open it in standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop. The file itself often acts as a metadata container (frequently formatted in JSON) that points to separate image files or embeds proprietary data chunks. This makes sharing sprite sheets with freelance artists or migrating assets to other game engines impossible without prior conversion.
Users typically need to convert .GMSPR to standard web-friendly formats like PNG to retain transparency, GIF for standalone animations, or JPG for static backgrounds. Converting outside of the engine will strip the specific collision mask data and animation timing variables, preserving only the visual pixel data.
Because this is a closed, proprietary project format, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the full asset data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like raw text metadata or encoded image frames - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GMSPR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GMSPR file to JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR, PSD or PSB, you can use GameMaker Studio or similar software from the "Game 2D Graphics Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to GMSPR, try GameMaker Studio or another comparable tool in the "Game 2D Graphics Storage" category.
The GMSPR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMSPR converter.
