About GM9 files

A .GM9 file is a plain text script used by the GodMode9 file manager for the Nintendo 3DS. These scripts automate complex, low-level system tasks like backing up the console's SysNAND, dumping physical game cartridges to CIA digital formats, or bulk-modifying internal system files.

Because they rely entirely on plain text commands, you can open and edit them using any basic text editor like Notepad on Windows, or advanced programming editors like Visual Studio Code.

The main disadvantage of the .GM9 format is its strict limitation to the GodMode9 custom firmware environment. You cannot execute these scripts on a standard PC. Furthermore, standard operating systems do not recognize the .GM9 extension. This results in annoying 'How do you want to open this file?' prompts for users who simply want to read or audit the code before putting it on their console's SD card.

To make these files easier to share, review, or edit on a computer, it is highly recommended to convert them to TXT or MD (Markdown). Converting standardizes the extension so web browsers and OS defaults recognize it immediately without losing the underlying text structure or data.

While the execution engine is highly specific to modded 3DS hardware, the file contents are completely open.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GM9 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GM7, GM5 and GM8 files.
