The .GFB extension is most frequently associated with WEG Automation as a PLC Function Block file. These files store reusable logic chunks (function blocks) created within WEG Programming Software (such as WPS or WLP) for use in industrial Programmable Logic Controllers like the PLC500 or PLC300. Unlike standard text files, .GFB files are proprietary and binary-encoded, meaning they cannot be viewed in editors like Notepad++ or converted using standard online document converters. Engineers typically encounter these when trying to migrate legacy automation logic or document a system's codebase. The only reliable way to "convert" a WEG .GFB file is to open it within the native WEG development environment and use the "Print" or "Export" function to generate a PDF for documentation, or export the code to IEC 61131-3 standard text formats (like ST or IL) if supported.
A secondary, historical use of .GFB is for GIFBlast Compressed Images. popular in the early 1990s, this utility compressed GIF files to save disk space. These files are now obsolete and effectively "locked" unless decompressed back to GIF using the original command-line gifblast.exe utility or an emulator.
