About GFAR files

The .gfar file extension is a Greenfoot Archive used by the educational Java development environment, Greenfoot. It stores packaged scenarios, including Java source code, compiled classes, and multimedia assets. Users typically open these files using the Greenfoot IDE, originally developed at the University of Kent (see Greenfoot on Wikipedia).

The .gfar format is highly specialized and restricted. Disadvantages include the inability to run the file outside the Greenfoot IDE, a lack of native support in standard operating systems, and the strict requirement to have a Java Virtual Machine installed. You cannot simply double-click it to play the game or run the simulation on a standard PC without the development environment. It is proprietary to its specific educational workflow.

The best conversion targets involve extracting the raw assets. Converting or renaming the file to ZIP or JAR allows users to access the internal JAVA source code files, PNG graphics, and WAV audio files. Note that converting it to a standard ZIP breaks its direct compatibility with the Greenfoot project import feature.

This file format is difficult to convert into standard executable formats (like EXE or MP4) because it relies entirely on the Greenfoot execution engine to compile and run. Standard online converters fail because they do not understand the internal folder structure or how to compile Java.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GFAR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JAR files.

The GFAR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GFAR converter.
