About GERO files

The .GERO file extension indicates that a file has been compromised and encrypted by the GERO ransomware, a malicious software designed to lock user data. Typically associated with the STOP/Djvu ransomware family, this malware targets common file types - like documents, images, and databases - scrambles their contents using strong cryptographic algorithms (such as AES-256 or RSA), and appends the .gero extension to the filename (e.g., report.docx.gero).

Users usually seek to convert these files simply to regain access to their lost data. The severe disadvantage of this format is its total inaccessibility; you cannot simply rename the extension or run it through a standard file converter. Standard converters look for specific structural headers (like the start of a PDF or JPEG), which the ransomware has intentionally destroyed or encrypted. The best target formats are obviously the original file types, but retrieving them requires a mathematical decryption process rather than format translation. While victims are urged not to pay the ransom, cybersecurity initiatives like the No More Ransom Project occasionally release free decryption tools when server keys are recovered by law enforcement.

Because this format is intentionally closed, proprietary, and heavily encrypted, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original decryption key can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GERO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The GERO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GERO converter.
