About GE files

The .ge file is a proprietary Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) program source file. It is primarily used by GE Fanuc Proficy Machine Edition and CoDeSys environments to store industrial automation code, machine control logic, and hardware configurations. These files are essential for programming automated machinery in manufacturing plants. The major disadvantage of the .ge format is its highly closed, proprietary nature. It requires an expensive, heavy software suite just to open or read the logic. You cannot natively view a .ge file in a standard text editor or web browser, which makes sharing code with unlicensed engineers or IT teams incredibly difficult. To review the machine logic outside of the factory floor, engineers typically attempt to convert these files to TXT, XML, or PDF. This allows for easy code review, though all compilation and deployment capabilities are lost. Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Often only the original software can properly read or export the structured data.
