A .GDW file is most frequently a Graph Digitizer Workspace created by GetData Graph Digitizer, a tool used by scientists and engineers to extract raw numerical data from images of graphs. These files utilize an XML-based structure to save your current project state, including the imported image, defined axis positions, and digitized data points. The primary limitation is that a .GDW is a project container, not a standard spreadsheet; you cannot simply open it in Microsoft Excel to view the numbers. To use the data, you must typically export it from the native software to TXT, XLS, or XML.
Alternatively, in civil engineering contexts, a .GDW file may represent a Geotechnical Drawing or data file associated with Bentley gINT (now part of OpenGround) or Geotechnical Desktop. These files often rely on the JetDB (Microsoft Access) engine to store subsurface data and borehole logs. These are highly proprietary and notorious for compatibility issues outside their specific CAD environments. Users stuck with these legacy files often need to convert them to PDF for archiving, DXF for CAD interoperability, or CSV to migrate the underlying data to modern systems.
