A .gbproj file is an older project format used by Apple GarageBand, a popular macOS and iOS digital audio workstation (DAW). It stores multi-track music compositions, MIDI data, imported audio, instrument settings, and effects for active audio projects.
On macOS, a .gbproj file (similar to the modern BAND extension) is not a single flat file. It is a package "bundle" - a hidden folder containing XML configuration files (projectData) and subdirectories of raw media assets. Because it is a closed, proprietary Apple format, it is fundamentally incompatible with Windows PCs, Android devices, and standard web browsers. You cannot just double-click a .gbproj file unless you are on an Apple device running GarageBand or Apple Logic Pro.
If you want to share a track with someone, do not send them the .gbproj file. Open the project in GarageBand and export it directly as an MP3, WAV, or M4A audio file. Exporting to a flat audio format permanently "bounces" the tracks together, meaning the recipient can easily listen to it on any device, but they will lose the ability to remix individual instruments or adjust MIDI data.
