About FZA files

The .FZA file is a proprietary autosave format created by Form•Z, a 3D solid and surface modeling application developed by AutoDesSys. This file acts as a temporary safety net, continuously storing the active state of a 3D project. Its primary use is crash recovery; if the software closes unexpectedly, Form•Z uses the .FZA file to restore the lost work. Because it is an autosave container, the .FZA format presents significant disadvantages. It is entirely proprietary and often contains fragmented, incremental data rather than a complete, optimized 3D scene. You cannot natively import an .FZA file into other standard 3D tools like Blender or AutoCAD. The format locks your geometry into the Form•Z ecosystem, making collaboration or rendering in external engines impossible without manual intervention. Users typically need to convert .FZA files to universal 3D formats such as OBJ, STL, STEP, or FBX. Converting to these formats ensures cross-platform compatibility, though you may lose specific procedural modifiers or proprietary Form•Z lighting setups in the translation process. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it lacks public documentation and is structurally incomplete compared to standard FMZ project files. Standard online 3D converters fail to process it because only the original AutoDesSys engine can properly reconstruct the incremental NURBS and polygonal data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying geometry stream, conversion or partial data extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FZA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FZA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FZA converter.
