About FTS files

The .FTS extension primarily refers to the Flexible Image Transport System, a specialized format used by astronomers and researchers to store scientific data. Unlike standard images (like JPG), an FITS file is a digital container that holds N-dimensional arrays (such as 1D spectra, 2D optical images, or 3D data cubes) alongside ASCII text headers that describe coordinate systems and photometric calibration.

The Problem: Because FITS files often contain 16-bit or 32-bit floating-point raw data, standard photo viewers cannot interpret them correctly. A raw FITS image often appears completely black on a standard monitor because the data range exceeds what a typical screen can display (linear vs. logarithmic scaling). Additionally, these files are uncompressed or losslessly compressed, making them too large for easy web sharing.

The FTS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FTS converter.
