The .ftg extension represents two distinct file types that confuse users due to their incompatibility with standard openers like Microsoft Word.

1. Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain Archive (Primary User Interest)

Most users looking to convert .ftg files are gamers or modders dealing with asset archives from the classic game Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. These are proprietary containers holding game data - sprites, audio clips, and level logic. They act like ZIP files but are locked in a custom format.

The Problem: You cannot view these in standard image viewers. Users often mistakenly try to convert them to PDF or JPG, but the file contains multiple assets, not a single document.

The Solution:

For Extraction: You must use specific extraction tools like Soul Spiral or Verok's GL Wrapper to unpack the internal contents into WAV (audio) or TIM/BMP (images).
For Viewing: Rename the file to see if standard archive tools can recognize the header (rarely works without mod tools).

2. Windows Help Full-Text Group (System File)

The original technical definition is a Full Text Group file used by the legacy Microsoft Windows Help system (WinHelp).

The Problem: These are generated automatically when a user performs a text search in an old HLP file. They function as a search index/pointer, often paired with a FTS (Full Text Search) file. They do not contain the manual's text.

The Solution:

Do Not Convert: Converting an index file to PDF will result in gibberish or a blank page.
Find the Source: Locate the corresponding HLP file if you want to read the documentation.
Safe to Delete: If you are cleaning up a drive, .ftg files can usually be deleted safely; Windows will regenerate them if you search the help file again.
