About FTG files

The .FTG file extension is most commonly associated with Game Asset Archives utilized in classic video games such as Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Battle of the Gods. These files function as proprietary data containers that bundle essential game resources - including audio tracks, 2D sprites, textures, and 3D models - into a single package for the game engine to load. A secondary use for .FTG is the Full Text Group format developed by Microsoft, which operates as a search index file for legacy software help systems.

The primary disadvantage of the .FTG format is its highly proprietary and closed-source architecture. Because these files were compiled using bespoke tools for specific 1990s and 2000s game engines or obsolete Microsoft utilities, they are entirely unsupported by modern operating systems and web browsers. Users cannot natively open or inspect them, making accessing the internal media highly frustrating without specialized reverse-engineered tools.

Converting a .FTG file is technically an extraction process rather than a direct format conversion. The ideal target formats depend on the packed assets: users typically want to extract WAV or MP3 for audio, and PNG or DDS for graphical textures. However, standard online converters universally fail to process .FTG files because they lack the niche decryption and unpacking algorithms required by these specific legacy engines.

This is where convert.guru provides a practical workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Explain clearly why standard online converters fail to process it: they do not understand the proprietary binary structure. Although .FTG is a difficult, closed format, our analysis engine can inspect the file's binary headers and display raw text or internal directory paths. If our system detects a supported underlying or embedded file format, viewing or extracting the core data may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FTG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BIP, TFW and SBN files.

The FTG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FTG converter.
