About FPENC files
The .fpenc file is a proprietary encrypted data container created by FileProtect. It is primarily used to lock sensitive documents and prevent unauthorized data extraction. To open and decrypt this file, you must use the original FileProtect software and provide the correct cryptographic key or password.
The primary disadvantage of the .fpenc format is its closed, proprietary nature. Files cannot be natively opened by modern operating systems like Windows or macOS, nor can they be viewed in web browsers. If you lose the decryption key, or if the original software becomes unsupported, your data is permanently inaccessible.
Standard online converters fail to process .fpenc files because the binary payload is scrambled. You cannot convert an encrypted file directly to a target format like PDF or DOCX without decrypting it first. Once unlocked in the native software, you can export the contents back to their original standard formats.
Because this file format is heavily encrypted, it is exceptionally difficult to open or convert using third-party tools. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. We will identify the file format, inspect the headers, and show any unencrypted metadata. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FPENC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FPENC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FPENC converter.
