About FOT files

A .FOT file is a legacy TrueType Font Resource file, historically used by Microsoft Windows (versions 3.1 through 95) to manage font installation. Unlike modern standalone font files, the .FOT format often acts as a specialized header or pointer system that references the actual TTF (TrueType Font) file containing the glyph data.

The primary disadvantage of this format is its complete obsolescence; modern operating systems like Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS do not natively recognize or render .FOT files. Furthermore, because these files were often created as part of an installation routine (pointing to a separate .TTF location), users frequently encounter "orphan" .FOT files in old backups that are unusable without the linked data. They are incompatible with professional design tools like Adobe Illustrator and cannot be used for web embedding (CSS @font-face).

To make these assets usable again, the best course of action is to convert them to standard TTF or OTF formats for desktop editing and printing. For web use, converting to WOFF or WOFF2 is essential to ensure browser compatibility.
