About FMAT files

The .FMAT file is a proprietary scientific data format known as an FMAT Runfile. It is created by hardware and software developed by Applied Biosystems (now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific). This file stores raw reading data from Fluorometric Microvolume Assay Technology instruments, which scan microplates in laboratory experiments.

The primary disadvantage of the .FMAT format is its closed, proprietary nature. These files are typically locked to the specific laboratory computer that runs the instrument software. Users cannot easily open them on standard personal computers, and they are not supported by web browsers or standard data analysis tools like Microsoft Excel. This creates a major bottleneck when researchers need to share data with bioinformaticians or data scientists. They require expensive, specialized software to read.

To analyze the results, users must convert or export the data from the .FMAT file into open formats like CSV, TXT, or XLSX. Because this format is highly specialized and its structure is closed, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read the raw binary data and correctly export the numerical values without data loss. Our tool can identify the file format, inspect the internal file structure, and show any readable text or metadata. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or data extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FMAT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert FMAT file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use FMAT System Software or similar software from the "Laboratory Assay Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to FMAT, try FMAT System Software or another comparable tool in the "Laboratory Assay Data Storage" category.

The FMAT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FMAT converter.
