About FLH files

The .FLH file extension is a variant of the FLIC Animation File format. Originally rooted in the animation standards created by Autodesk, the .flh specific variant was typically used to store 15-bit high-color animations. It is most famous for its use as a video container in retro PC games (such as Lego Rock Raiders), where it stored full-motion video (FMV) and audio sequences.

Historically, these files were played or compiled with MS-DOS era utilities or specialized modding software like FlicTool. You need to convert this file because modern operating systems, web browsers, and standard video players (like VLC or Windows Media Player) lack the native codecs to decode legacy 15-bpp FLIC animations. The format is proprietary, largely undocumented in modern SDKs, and completely isolated from today's streaming standards.

To make these animations playable today, converting them to MP4 (for standard video playback) or GIF (for silent looping animations) is highly recommended. Converting to AVI is also a reliable choice. Note that during conversion, the original palette-based color space is translated to modern RGB, which might result in minor visual artifacting.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it uses a highly specific Run-Length Encoding (RLE) compression algorithm optimized for delta-frame updates in 1990s hardware. Often, only the original game engine or community-built retro decompilers can properly read the internal chunk structures, causing standard online converters to fail. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FLH file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
