Convert GRASP to another file type
To convert GRASP animations to another format, you need GRASP or other Video software.
Convert a file to GRASP
To convert other file formats to the "MS-DOS Animation Container" file type, you need software like GRASP or a similar tool.
About GRASP files
The .grasp file is a legacy multimedia animation format developed in the 1980s. Originally created for MS-DOS environments, these files function as containers that hold programmable text scripts, color maps, fonts, and low-resolution image frames. They were primarily used to create rudimentary educational tutorials, games, and graphical presentations.
The format was native to GRASP (Graphical System for Presentation), an early PC software developed by John Bridges and Doug Wolfgram.
Users typically want to convert .grasp files to modern video formats like mp4, avi, or gif so they can be viewed on modern operating systems or shared on the web. However, the current format is completely obsolete. It is highly proprietary, limited to 256 colors, and entirely unsupported by modern web browsers or standard video players. Because it is essentially a script-driven engine rather than a continuous stream of pixels, standard conversion is a major technical challenge.
Converting a .grasp file to mp4 or gif usually results in a complete failure when using standard online tools. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because it relies on a specific MS-DOS runtime executable (GRASPRT.EXE) to render its internal code into an animation in real-time. Without this engine, the animation simply does not exist. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as internal text scripts or distinct pic image frames - viewing or extracting these individual assets may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GRASP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted GL, STR, PDF, KFA, A8 and WSA files.

The GRASP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GRASP converter.
