About FGL files
The .FGL file is a Fifth Generation Language Source File typically containing source code written in a constraint-based or logic-programming language. Programmers use these files to build applications where the system solves problems based on given constraints rather than explicit step-by-step algorithms. Originally associated with legacy systems from Fifth Generation Systems, these files hold plain text programming instructions.
You can open and view the raw text of an .fgl file using basic code editors like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code.
A major disadvantage of the .FGL format is its severe obsolescence. Compilers for legacy 5GL software are rare, difficult to configure, and often require complex emulators to run on modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS. Furthermore, standard web browsers cannot parse or execute this code natively, making it hard to share with non-technical users.
If you need to share the code, the best conversion targets are TXT for basic reading, MD for markdown documentation, or PDF to prevent accidental edits and preserve formatting. Converting to another programming language automatically is impossible without specialized transpilers, meaning functional logic will be lost if you simply force a file extension change.
Because this is a highly uncommon legacy source format, standard online converters often fail to process it.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FGL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FGL file to JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS, PHP, RB, GO, RS or SWIFT, you can use Notepad++ or similar software from the "Source Code Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to FGL, try Notepad++ or another comparable tool in the "Source Code Storage" category.
The FGL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FGL converter.
