About FFIL files

The .FFIL file extension indicates a Mac Font Suitcase, a legacy font container developed by Apple originally for Classic Mac OS. These files act as digital briefcases, bundling multiple fonts - usually bitmap screen fonts or TrueType fonts - into a single, easily installable package.

The primary disadvantage of the .FFIL format is its absolute reliance on the Mac filesystem's "resource fork." The actual font data is stored in this secondary data stream. Modern operating systems (like Windows or Linux) and standard internet protocols do not support resource forks. If you copy a .FFIL file to a USB drive formatted for Windows, email it, or upload it to a standard server without zipping it first, the resource fork is stripped away. This permanently destroys the font data, leaving behind a useless 0-byte file. Additionally, the format is proprietary and obsolete, requiring specialized software to manage on modern machines.

To use these fonts in modern graphic design software or on the web, you must convert the .FFIL file to standardized, cross-platform formats like TTF (TrueType Font), OTF (OpenType Font), or WOFF (Web Open Font Format).

Because this file format hides its critical data inside legacy resource forks, it is notoriously difficult to open or convert. Standard online converters and basic font editors will immediately fail to read it. If our analysis detects intact embedded font data, viewing or conversion to common formats may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FFIL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FFIL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FFIL converter.
