About FFA files

The .ffa file extension represents a collision between modern science and legacy enterprise software. primarily, it is a FASTA Amino Acid file, a text-based format used in bioinformatics to store protein sequences. These files contain amino acid residues represented by single-letter codes, typically preceded by a header line starting with a greater-than symbol (>). Researchers and students often need to convert these raw data files into PDF for academic publishing or XLSX to analyze sequence properties in Microsoft Excel.

However, users maintaining older systems may encounter .ffa files as Find Fast Index files. This legacy format was generated by the Microsoft Find Fast utility in Office 97 and Office 95 to speed up document searches. These index files are proprietary, binary blobs that often grew to manageable sizes or became corrupted, leading to system slowdowns ('thrashing'). Unlike the bioinformatics format, the Microsoft index cannot be opened or converted into a readable document; it is a system artifact that is generally safe to delete if found on modern machines.

For scientific users, the main difficulty is compatibility: generic text editors like Notepad++ can open them, but they lack the formatting tools required for presentation. Converting to PDF or DOCX allows for proper pagination and annotation of genetic sequences.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FFA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FFO, TXT and LDB files.

FAQ

If you want to convert FFA file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use NCBI BLAST or similar software from the "Protein Sequence Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to FFA, try NCBI BLAST or another comparable tool in the "Protein Sequence Storage" category.

The FFA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FFA converter.
