About FFA files
An .FFA file is a legacy index or status file created by the obsolete Microsoft Office Find Fast utility. Used primarily in Windows 95, 98, and NT environments, this software ran in the background to catalog files and speed up local searches.
Because it is a background system file, an .FFA file does not contain traditional document data. It is highly proprietary and essentially a binary database of search hashes and file paths. The main disadvantage of this format is that it is entirely useless outside of its original legacy ecosystem. Furthermore, Find Fast was infamous for aggressively consuming CPU and disk resources, leading many administrators to disable it.
Users often want to convert or open .FFA files when trying to recover data from old hard drives, mistaking them for actual documents. You cannot convert an .FFA file into a DOCX or PDF because the original text is not stored inside. Standard online converters fail to process it because it is a closed, proprietary data format, not a standard media or document file.
Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. While you cannot restore the original documents from an .FFA file, our analysis can inspect the binary data and extract embedded plain text (TXT) to help you see what file paths or strings were originally indexed.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FFA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FFA file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Microsoft Office or similar software from the "Legacy Search Index Cache" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to FFA, try Microsoft Office or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Search Index Cache" category.
The FFA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FFA converter.
