About FES files

A .FES file is a Fileless Occurrence Placeholder originally utilized by the defunct 3D personal information manager, 3D Topicscape. These files are generated when a "fileless occurrence" (a node that contains only notes or metadata without an attached document) is exported from the application to the standard Windows file system. Developed by G&A Management Consultants Ltd, 3D Topicscape used .FES files to enable a "round-trip" data exchange. Users could export mind-map nodes to Windows, modify the placeholder files, and seamlessly re-import them to update the visual 3D map.

The primary disadvantage of the .FES format is that it relies entirely on a closed, obsolete software ecosystem. 3D Topicscape is no longer supported, meaning that if you uncover an archive full of .FES placeholders today, you cannot double-click them to view the original 3D knowledge map. Furthermore, modern web browsers and standard productivity suites do not recognize the extension, making the embedded information seem completely inaccessible to the average user. Because these placeholders are ultimately structured as plain text, your best option is to convert .FES to TXT, JSON, or XML. This conversion will successfully salvage the written notes and metadata. However, you will permanently lose the proprietary visual relationship data, such as the 3D cone and pyramid structural maps.

This file format is difficult to process because standard online converters are configured to expect traditional media or document extensions, not obscure "round-trip" data placeholders. They fail because they cannot parse the application-specific headers. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FEZ, ATY and TOPC files.

The FES Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FES converter.
