About FDXT files
A .fdxt file is a proprietary screenplay template created by Final Draft version 8 or later. It stores reusable script formatting rules, margin settings, title page layouts, and character macros rather than the actual script content. These files are typically opened and managed using Final Draft, which is the industry-standard software for screenwriting.
The main disadvantage of the .fdxt format is its proprietary nature. It requires an expensive software license to use properly. You cannot natively open it in web browsers or standard word processors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Furthermore, because it is specifically designed to dictate UI and formatting within the Final Draft ecosystem, trying to share this template with collaborators using alternative screenwriting software usually fails.
Users typically need to convert .fdxt files into standard fdx (Final Draft Document) files to actually write a script, or extract the base content to universal formats like rtf or txt. However, this file format is difficult to open or convert directly because it contains highly specific margin and styling definitions unique to the Final Draft engine. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data without breaking the precise industry-standard margins. Because version 8 files transitioned to an XML-based structure under the hood, we can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content.

The FDXT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FDXT converter.
