The .F2K file format serves two very different, but equally technical, purposes. Most commonly, it is a Fortran Source Code file representing the iteration of the language that was developed around the year 2000 (later finalized as Fortran 2003). These files contain plain-text programming instructions used for intensive numerical and scientific computing.
Alternatively, in the structural engineering industry, an .F2K file is an ASCII text export file generated by SAP2000 or ETABS (software by Computers and Structures, Inc.). Engineers use this format to transfer complex model data - such as joint reactions, geometry, and load cases - into SAFE for foundation and slab design.
Users often struggle with .F2K files because they lack the specific environment required to open them. A Fortran file requires a compiler like GNU Fortran, while the engineering export requires a $5000+ CSI software license. If you are locked out of your structural data, you face a major roadblock.
