About EXX files

The .EXX file is predominantly a renamed EXE (Executable) file designed to execute on Microsoft Windows. Users typically encounter this file when someone attempts to send a software application, installer, or script via email. Modern email providers and network firewalls block executable attachments to prevent malware distribution. By changing the extension from EXE to .EXX, senders temporarily bypass these automated security filters. In extremely rare, legacy instances, an .EXX file may represent an IBM Linkway MsgPut file, which was used by early multimedia educational software developed by IBM. The primary disadvantage of the current format is that it is completely unusable in its altered state and inherently suspicious.
