About EXX files

A .exx file is most frequently a standard Windows Executable (EXE) that has been manually renamed to bypass email security filters or firewall restrictions. System administrators and automated mail scripts often change the extension from EXE to .exx because standard email gateways (like Microsoft Outlook) block executable attachments to prevent malware spread. As a result, the operating system does not know how to handle the file, and double-clicking it usually triggers an "Open With" dialog rather than launching the application. While less common, this extension was also used historically by IBM LinkWay for MsgPut files.

The catch with .exx files is strictly procedural: the data is valid, but the filename obfuscates its purpose. Users cannot simply "convert" this in the traditional sense; they must verify the file's safety and restore its association. If you are archiving these files or need to send them through a modern web filter that now catches the .exx trick, the best "conversion" target is a compressed archive like ZIP or 7Z. This encapsulates the executable safely. If you need to run the software, you must rename the extension back to EXE, but only after verifying the source, as this bypass technique is a common vector for viruses.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EXX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CHS, ISS and INS files.

The EXX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EXX converter.
