About EW files
A .EW file is primarily a seismic event data file generated by the Earthworm system, an open-source regional seismic network platform originally developed by the USGS. These files typically contain waveform data, "pick" information (arrival times of seismic waves), or configuration parameters used in earthquake monitoring workflows. The major problem for users is that .EW files often exist as raw binary or specialized ASCII formats that standard text editors or spreadsheet software cannot interpret meaningfully. They are designed for machine-to-machine communication within a seismic network, not for desktop analysis. Consequently, researchers and engineers frequently need to convert these files into CSV or TXT for analysis in Microsoft Excel or MATLAB, or to .MSEED (MiniSEED) for compatibility with modern seismological software like ObsPy.
Less commonly, a .EW file may be a project file from Trakware EarthWorks, a legacy software suite used for excavation and construction estimation. These are proprietary binary files containing site plans and 3D terrain models. Opening these without the original dongle-protected software is virtually impossible, making conversion to DXF or PDF essential for viewing historical project data without maintaining expensive legacy licenses.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The EW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EW converter.
