The .esi extension serves two distinct, high-stakes professional purposes. Most commonly in Denmark, it is a Danish Payroll Statistics file, a rigid data interchange format used to report salary information to Danmarks Statistik and Dansk Arbejdsgiverforening. Generated by payroll systems like Danløn or Visma DataLøn, these files use a strict, mainframe-style fixed-width or tab-separated structure (with specific row types 1, 3, 4, and 9) that is nearly impossible for humans to audit in a standard text editor.
