Extract text from MathType settings files (EQL)

The .EQL file format serves two distinct purposes: it is either a proprietary MathType Settings file or a plain-text Embedded SQL file. MathType files, originally developed by Design Science (now Wiris), store specific mathematical equation formatting preferences, spacing, and font sizes used in document creation. Embedded SQL files contain database query statements integrated into host programming languages like C or Java.
The primary disadvantage of the MathType Settings format is its proprietary, closed-source nature. It relies on a specific internal structure that standard text editors cannot parse. Users without a paid subscription to MathType cannot natively apply or read these styling rules. This lock-in forces users to share settings files manually and requires the recipient to have the same software installed. Conversely, Embedded SQL files are generally plain text but require a compiler or database management system to execute the embedded commands properly.
Converting an .EQL file is highly dependent on its origin. An Embedded SQL file is easily renamed or converted to SQL or TXT for cross-platform reading. A MathType Settings file is difficult to open or convert outside of its native ecosystem. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the equation formatting data to standard formats like TEX (LaTeX) or .MathML. Even if the file uses a closed proprietary format, if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text structure, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
