Extract text from Property and pattern files (EPE)
To convert EPE Properties and patterns to another format, you need Just Cause 3 or other Game software.
To convert other file formats to the "Modding Data Container" file type, you need software like Just Cause 3 or a similar tool.
The .epe extension represents two distinct formats that users frequently need to convert for editing or compatibility.
The most common .epe file is a binary property container used by the Avalanche Engine, specifically in Just Cause 3. These files act as the "brain" of game entities, defining critical behaviors for vehicles, weapons, and NPCs (e.g., how a car handles or weapon recoil stats). Because the format is proprietary and binary, you cannot edit it directly in a text editor. To modify game stats, modders must use Gibbed's Just Cause 3 Tools to convert the .epe file into a human-readable XML format. After editing the XML, it must be converted back to .epe for the game to read it.
Less frequently, an .epe file is a pattern export for the Pixelblaze LED controller. Unlike the game file, this is actually a standard JSON text file containing JavaScript-based pattern code, unique IDs, and preview data. Users run into issues because their operating system does not recognize the extension. You can simply rename these to JSON or TXT to view the source code, or import them directly into the Pixelblaze Web UI.
