About EFIRES files
An .EFIRES file is a specialized system resource container used exclusively by Apple macOS to store graphical assets displayed during the boot process. These files typically reside in the /usr/standalone/i386/ directory or the hidden EFI partition and contain the iconic Apple logo, the spinning progress gear, the low-battery indicator, and the "prohibitory" sign seen when a Mac fails to boot.
Because .EFIRES files are compiled binary resources designed for the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) environment, they are not recognized by standard image viewers like Preview or Adobe Photoshop. This proprietary lock-in makes it impossible for users to simply double-click and view the contents. Users typically encounter these files when troubleshooting boot issues, creating "Hackintosh" systems, or attempting to customize their boot logos. To view or edit these graphics, you must convert the .EFIRES container into standard raster formats. For web sharing or editing, convert to PNG or JPG. For archiving the raw bitmap data, BMP is often the closest structural match.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EFIRES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EFIRES file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use macOS or similar software from the "Boot Screen Graphics" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to EFIRES, try macOS or another comparable tool in the "Boot Screen Graphics" category.
The EFIRES Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EFIRES converter.
