About ECX files

The .ECX file extension is primarily associated with ECCO Pro, a legacy Personal Information Manager (PIM) developed by NetManage. Specifically, it represents an ECCO Corrupted Database File. When an original ECO database file experiences structural data corruption or index errors, the software renames it to .ECX during the database recovery or rebuild process to quarantine the damaged state while protecting the main file.

Historically, users accessed and attempted to repair these files directly within ECCO Pro. The main disadvantage of the .ECX format is that it is not only a proprietary, undocumented, and obsolete database structure, but it is also mathematically damaged. It requires vintage software - typically running on a 32-bit Windows environment or emulator - to attempt a native repair. Modern operating systems, text editors, and web browsers cannot read or parse its binary records natively.

Users typically need to convert this data into CSV, TXT, or XML to rescue trapped contacts, calendar entries, and notes. Because this is a closed, proprietary, and structurally broken format, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software's internal database recovery tools can properly reconstruct the proprietary index trees. If our analysis detects intact underlying ASCII text blocks or embedded records amidst the corruption, raw text extraction or partial viewing may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ECX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ECX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECX converter.
