About E00 files
The .E00 file format, technically known as the ArcInfo Interchange File, is a legacy container used to transport GIS "coverages." In the era of Esri ArcInfo Workstation, geospatial data was stored in complex directories (Coverages) that maintained strict topological relationships between arcs, nodes, and polygons. Because these directory structures were fragile and difficult to transfer (e.g., via email or floppy disk), the .E00 format was created to collapse the entire coverage - including geometry and attribute tables - into a single ASCII or compressed binary file.
Today, .E00 files are a significant source of friction for GIS professionals. Modern software like ArcGIS Pro no longer reads them natively as a primary data source; they must be "imported" using specific geoprocessing tools to extract the internal coverage first. They are not viewable in standard web browsers, cannot be opened by standard office apps, and often lack the projection definition (.prj) required for immediate alignment on a map. To make this legacy data usable, you must convert it. For broad compatibility with modern GIS tools like QGIS or ArcGIS, convert .E00 to Shapefile (.SHP). For web mapping and visualization in Google Earth, convert to KML or GeoJSON. For engineering workflows, DXF is the standard target.
Convert.Guru analyzes your E00 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert E00 file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use ArcGIS or similar software from the "GIS Data Interchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to E00, try ArcGIS or another comparable tool in the "GIS Data Interchange" category.
The E00 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our E00 converter.
