About DZT files

The .DZT extension primarily refers to a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Data file generated by Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. (GSSI) equipment. These binary files store raw signal reflection data (radargrams) collected during subsurface surveys to map utilities, concrete structures, or geological features.

A major friction point for professionals is that .DZT files are proprietary binary blobs. They are unreadable without the expensive GSSI RADAN software suite. You cannot simply open them in Excel or a standard text editor. Furthermore, a valid .DZT often relies on companion files like .DZG (GPS coordinates) or .DZX (processing history) to be interpreted correctly; losing these renders the data spatially useless.

For analysis in MATLAB, Python, or CAD software, users must convert .DZT files to open formats. Common targets include CSV (for statistical analysis), DXF (for AutoCAD integration), or PNG/JPG (for visual reporting).

A secondary, less common use of the extension is for DirectorZone Title files used by CyberLink PowerDirector. These are XML-based templates for video overlays and are generally not meant to be converted, but rather imported directly into the video editor.
