About DZI files

The .DZI format primarily functions as a Deep Zoom Image descriptor. Developed by Microsoft, it relies on XML to catalog and map out a pyramid of high-resolution image tiles. When used with a viewer library like OpenSeadragon, the .DZI file provides instructions on how to stitch together thousands of tiny JPG or PNG files from a companion directory. This enables smooth zooming on massive, gigapixel images without downloading the entire file into RAM at once. Other, less common applications include a legacy dBASE IV/V index file, a Bilibili video cache file, or a composite graphic for the CatSystem2 game engine.

The most significant disadvantage of a .DZI file is that it is not a standalone image. If a user receives a 2KB .DZI file without the accompanying _files folder containing the actual visual data, the file is functionally useless. Furthermore, because it relies on hundreds or thousands of separate tile files, moving and sharing Deep Zoom projects is extremely slow and prone to data corruption. Standard desktop image viewers like Windows Photos or macOS Preview cannot interpret the XML mapping, leaving users staring at raw code instead of a picture.

Users typically want to convert a .DZI project back into a single, massive JPG, PNG, or TIFF file for printing or standard offline viewing. However, stitching tiles together requires significant computational power and memory. Recombining a gigapixel image often results in out-of-memory crashes on standard hardware if the resulting image exceeds basic dimension limits.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because the .DZI file itself only contains text coordinates, not pixel data. Standard online converters fail to process it because they cannot access the external tile directory residing on your local hard drive. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DZI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPG, PNG, TIF, NOT and 3DXML files.

The DZI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DZI converter.
