About DUN files
The .DUN file extension is primarily a proprietary game data file used by Dungeon Defenders, a tower defense action role-playing game originally developed by Trendy Entertainment. These files store critical game assets, including custom maps, hero character progression data, and saved game states. A smaller subset of .DUN files represents legacy Microsoft Dial-Up Networking settings or resource files for older games like Dune or Dungeon Siege.
The main disadvantage of .DUN files is their closed, proprietary nature. They are strictly designed to be read by the game's internal engine. They cannot be opened natively by operating systems, web browsers, or standard productivity software. If you attempt to open a .DUN game map in a standard text editor, you will only see garbled binary data. Modding or extracting data from these files typically requires community-built tools or specific game developer kits.
Standard online converters fail to process .DUN files because there is no logical equivalent target format; a 3D game map or character binary cannot be simply converted into a PDF or JPG. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. Our system will inspect the hex header to determine if your file is a compiled binary game asset or a legacy plain-text dial-up setting, showing you underlying text or embedded data strings where supported.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DUN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DUN file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Dungeon Defenders or similar software from the "Game Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to DUN, try Dungeon Defenders or another comparable tool in the "Game Data Storage" category.
The DUN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DUN converter.
