About DUN files

The .DUN file extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes, causing frequent confusion. Its most common modern use is in the Dungeon Defenders video game series by Trendy Entertainment. In this context, the file acts as a binary container for game maps, hero data, or saved game states. These files are proprietary and compiled specifically for the Unreal Engine, meaning they cannot be opened by standard image viewers or text editors. A 100MB .DUN file is likely a map package, while smaller KB-sized files often hold character stats.

Alternatively, if you are recovering data from the 1990s, a .DUN file is a Dial-Up Networking export from Microsoft Windows (95/98 era). These legacy files store ISP connection settings (phone numbers, IP protocols) in an INI-like text structure.

Practical Constraints:
Users often attempt to convert game .DUN files to JPG or PDF to view maps, but this is impossible without rendering the data inside the game engine or a dedicated modding tool like the Dungeon Defenders Development Kit. For legacy Dial-Up files, the best conversion target is TXT, allowing you to read the configuration data in Notepad.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DUN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HDC, ENGB and SGO files.
