About DITAMAP files

A .ditamap file is an XML-based DITA Topic Map file standardized by OASIS. It functions as a table of contents that organizes, links, and sequences individual dita topic files into a complete publication like a technical manual or help system. Typically, these files are managed using specialized XML editors like Oxygen XML Editor and processed using the DITA Open Toolkit. The major disadvantage of a .ditamap format is that it does not contain the actual readable content; it is merely a structural manifest. If you try to open or convert a .ditamap without the accompanying topic files, the result will be an empty outline or a wall of broken links. It is completely unsupported by standard web browsers and word processors. To create a readable document, you must compile the entire DITA project into a PDF, HTML, or EPUB file. Standard online converters fail to process these files properly because they cannot access the local linked content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format, partial viewing or text extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DITAMAP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
