About DHTML files

A .dhtml file is a Dynamic HTML document. It contains standard HTML markup alongside embedded or linked JavaScript and CSS to animate elements, handle user input, or change page styles dynamically.

You can open these files with any standard web browser like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or text editors like Visual Studio Code or Notepad++. To learn more about its history, see Dynamic HTML on Wikipedia.

The term "DHTML" is a relic from the late 1990s browser wars. While modern browsers still process them natively, maintaining these older files is difficult. They often contain legacy, unoptimized JavaScript or deprecated DOM methods that cause security warnings or break in strict browser environments. Furthermore, rendering a complex dynamic page into a static format for archiving is historically tricky because the content changes after the initial load.

If you need to archive the visual state, convert .dhtml to pdf, png, or jpg. If you are standardizing code, simply rename or convert it to standard html. Note that converting to a static image or document will strip all interactive JavaScript features.

Because these files rely on client-side rendering, standard online converters often fail to process the dynamic scripts.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DHTML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
