About DEFT files

A .DEFT file is a proprietary configuration file used by Juice Grinder, a Windows-based e-liquid (eJuice) recipe calculator developed by Chris Formeister. DIY vapers use this software to calculate precise mixtures of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), nicotine, and flavorings. The .DEFT file specifically stores the user's default template parameters - such as preferred baseline nicotine strengths and target volume amounts - so they do not have to be manually re-entered every time a new recipe (.GRIND file) is created.

Users typically need to extract or convert .DEFT files when they abandon Juice Grinder for modern, cloud-based mixing platforms or mobile applications. The primary disadvantage of the format is its strict vendor lock-in. It requires a legacy Windows operating system with the .NET framework to open properly. You cannot natively import a .DEFT template into competing software like eJuice Me Up.

Converting a .DEFT file is difficult because it is a closed, internal settings format rather than a standard data export. While the software allows exporting finished recipes to standard formats, it restricts the export of default templates. Generic online file converters fail to recognize the extension and cannot parse the custom structure. Our analyzer will bypass the extension, inspect the underlying file signature, and attempt to extract the raw template values into a readable TXT or CSV format. While the file will not magically function as a plug-and-play template in other software, you will be able to retrieve your target percentages and base values to rebuild your mixing profile manually.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DEFT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The DEFT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DEFT converter.
