About DDM files
The .ddm extension is a multi-purpose container most frequently associated with Data Dictionary Models created by erwin Data Modeler (now part of Quest Software). These files serve as the architectural blueprints for enterprise databases, storing schemas, entity-relationship diagrams (ERD), and metadata definitions. Users typically need to convert these files to share database structures with stakeholders who do not have a license for the expensive modeling software, or to generate usable SQL scripts for deployment.
A major friction point is that .ddm files are proprietary and version-sensitive; a file saved in a newer version of erwin often cannot be opened in legacy versions. Furthermore, the extension is reused by other specialized tools: Alpha Anywhere (formerly Alpha Five) uses it for Data Dictionary Memos, MIKE Powered by DHI uses it for hydraulic modeling data, and Dynamic Designer uses it for motion simulation.
For database documentation, the best target format is PDF or HTML (for read-only web viewing). For interoperability with other database tools, converting to XML or standard SQL DDL (Data Definition Language) files is recommended. For MIKE simulation data, users often need to export to CSV or Shapefile (SHP) for use in GIS software.

The DDM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DDM converter.
