About DDAT files
A .DDAT file is a temporary video cache file generated by the DivX Player or the DivX Web Player plugin. It is utilized to buffer video data while streaming or downloading content from the internet. Once the download is complete, the software typically renames the file to a standard video extension like DIVX or AVI.
The .DDAT format presents several disadvantages for regular users. Because it is a temporary buffer, the file is often incomplete and lacks the standard video headers required for playback. While the file is actively downloading, it remains locked by the operating system, preventing access. If a stream is interrupted, the resulting .DDAT file becomes an orphaned chunk of raw video data that most standard media players and web browsers cannot process.
To make the video usable across modern devices, converting the file to MP4, AVI, or MKV is the best approach. Target formats like MP4 ensure high compatibility with mobile devices and smart TVs, though you may lose DivX-specific interactive menus or proprietary subtitle tracks embedded in the original stream.
Standard online converters usually fail to process .DDAT files because they rely on intact video headers and metadata that these partial files lack. Because this is a proprietary, temporary format, often only the original DivX software can properly read or finalize the data stream. However, you can still use convert.guru as a practical workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded video format within the cache, viewing or conversion may still be successful.

The DDAT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DDAT converter.
