The .dcn file is primarily a DICOM Medical Image file used by hospitals and clinics to store medical scans like MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasounds. Secondarily, the extension is used for Data Change Notification files in Aptos retail software (formerly Retek) or as a Mexican tax opinion report via SIPRED.
To open medical .dcn files, you must use specialized software like RadiAnt DICOM Viewer or open-source medical readers. Retail data versions are typically UTF-8 plain text and are managed by the Retek DCN Loader.
The medical .dcn format is highly specialized and proprietary to clinical environments. These files are typically large because they store heavy metadata - such as patient demographics and scanner settings - alongside the uncompressed image grid. You cannot open these files natively in Windows or macOS, and standard web browsers or basic image editors completely block them. Sharing these files with patients or non-medical staff is notoriously frustrating because it forces the recipient to install dedicated, sometimes expensive, viewer software.
For web use or sharing scans with patients, convert .dcn to JPG or PNG. For archiving patient records as standard documents, convert to PDF/A. Be aware that converting DICOM to standard image formats flattens the multi-layered image data and permanently strips the hidden patient metadata.
